Officer In Ferguson: Residents Are Great, Outsiders Causing Problems

I had a number of Ferguson residents call into my program today frustrated with the behavior of some out-of-state rabble-rousers. An officer in the area said the same:

I don’t necessarily agree with the use of armored vehicles or militarized tactics but it’s interesting to hear a different perspective on it.

“I know it looks very militaristic on the news … but those are spread out normally twenty miles from each other [...]

Every night when we take fire, those things are saving our lives [...] it’s been our staple.”

On outsiders:

“The residents of that community couldn’t be any nicer or more welcoming to us. It’s a pleasure to get to meet everyone I get to meet. They’re wonderful people and I’m glad that got to go to a neighborhood that i never get to go to and talk with them. they love their community and they keep it clean. I think it’s fantastic that the kids go out, the high school kids, and they try to clean up after the unwanted people and they go out there every day and they do it. They’re not wanting to get interviewed or anything they’re just wanting to clean up. I applaud them. They’re doing more than we are.”

The frustration with outsiders is real. Antonio French, Alderman of Missouri’s 21st Ward, notes this:

The Missouri Torch has video of Ferguson residents and peaceful protesters arguing with outside agitators and trying to get them to leave.

Jim Hoft has video of another Ferguson resident confronting a reported white Chicago communist who some allege on Twitter brought Molotov cocktails:

This statistic too:

People like the outsiders in these videos follow unrest like whirling hippies follow Phish. Ferguson doesn’t need that.
